Job Description  
What are the major goals/objectives to be accomplished by the person in this job?
    Responsible for the design, development and qualification of embedded firmware and digital design elements of a new exciting medical device system.
    Successfully organize work activities and priorities in order to meet overall program goals.
    Contribute to Group’s overall goals and objective.
    Serve as a technical resource to other cross functional team members.
    Help to grow and shape the firmware and embedded design expertise in the Group.
    Be responsible for specification development, generating project plans including schedule and budget, and development of software programs within an ISO 13485 development system.  
    Analysis, coding, testing and debugging, including documentation for the software system.

What are the most frequent and most essential work activities in this job?
    Analyze, develop and create firmware, FPGA designs or other digital elements for implantable and external medical products following established design control procedures.
    Research, generate and document intellectual property.
    Use root cause analysis and critical thinking.
    Identification and development of relevant tests and specifications.
    Interact with customers and suppliers, internal and external, to assure product and project requirements are fulfilled.
    Work with other project engineers to define product requirements.
    Create detailed design documents and descriptions.
    Write verification test plans and reports.
    Specification development, project planning, customer interaction, implementation of digital and firmware design activities for implantable medical devices, project management, and design verification/validation.
    Work on a mix of FPGA design and embedded firmware with both internal and external development partners.
    Drive the software and embedded firmware through the full development life cycle including product definition, specification, development, testing and post-release support.
    Present design implementation and algorithm approaches to internal/external groups.
    Some travel will be required.

What is the organizational structure with direct reports and levels?
    This position reports directly to the EE Manager in PLY, and will interact closely with other cross-functional managers and technical associates.  This position will have no direct reports.

What levels and to what degree will this position interact with, internally and/or externally?
    This position will require interaction involving superiors, peers, and technical managers. Interaction with external customers and suppliers may be necessary.  The position will be part of a cross-functional team so the ability to work in this environment is critical.

How will this person use their communication skills (i.e. presentations, to whom, what media)?
    This position will require interaction involving superiors, peers, and technical managers. Interaction with external customers and suppliers may be necessary.  Presentations to the project team, internal and external customers, and senior management will be common.

What are the specific skills/performance drivers required for someone to succeed in this position? Include those effecting the “what is accomplished” and the “how it is accomplished” to be a success.
    Required:  Bachelor’s degree or higher in computer science, electrical or computer engineering.  MS in an engineering discipline a plus.  7+ years of hands-on direct design experience with a minimum of 3 years working on medical devices or similar regulated industry.
    Direct design experience with Verilog, VHDL, synthesis, design, simulation and verification tools and techniques.  Direct Xilinx Spartan series FPGA experience a plus.
    Experience in C++, C, Python, and Linux for embedded software real time operating systems.
    Track record of establishing system requirements, system design and prototyping, verification and validation, risk analysis/FMEA and system testing.
    Experience in development, testing and evaluation of medical devices.
    Presentation, interpersonal, communication, follow-through and organizational skills.
    Ability to analyze data, apply statistical methods and interpret results.
    Self motivation as well as the ability to function comfortably in a team environment is critical.
    Work effectively with coworkers at all levels.
    Ability to complete projects following product development guidelines on a timely basis, within scope, in budget, and with minimal supervision.
    Working knowledge of GMP, ISO and FDA regulations and expertise in design controls within a regulated industry.
    Drives speed and innovation without sacrificing quality and cost.

    Desired:  Experience with Bluetooth and other communication protocols.
    XML, C#, TCP/IP Networking experience.
    Working knowledge of Digital Signal Processing (DSP) tools, techniques, and best practices.
    Familiar with implementing custom communication protocols.
    Hand-on experience with commercial RF hardware and protocols such as BlueTooth, Wifi, Zigbee, WiMax, etc.
    ASIC design process experience.
